The Municipal Building and Municipal Auditorium (GMA) was built in 1939 as a public works project of the Roosevelt administration. The Auditorium has 1,400 theater-style seats and has hosted a wide variety of artists for the past 80 years from Elvis Presley to Duke Ellington. Today the Auditorium hosts a multitude of events including symphony concerts, country shows, plays, musicals, dance recitals, and much more. Several different organizations present series of shows each year. The Greenville Entertainment Series brings in a variety of artists including classical, country, big band and many other types of performances. The GMA also has the pleasure to welcome the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for three performances each year as well. Greenville is the only community outside of Dallas to have this exclusive deal with the DSO. The Kenneth Threadgill Series brings acts in the genres of country, Americana, bluegrass and folk music. Each Summer, Greenville Family Theatre brings a major musical production to the stage, and Greenville Theatre Works presents three different plays each season. Over all, they offer entertainment for every taste and hope to see you at a show real soon!
As early as the beginning of the 20th century, citizens of Greenville were keenly aware of the need for an auditorium, a gathering place for the community. However, it was not until the 1930’s that the dream finally became a reality. The Greenville Municipal Auditorium officially opened October 24, 1939, as a public works project of the Roosevelt Administration. Uniquely situated above City Hall, the auditorium’s stage has been graced by a variety of performers including Elvis Presley, Duke Ellington, Van Cliburn, Loretta Lynn, MercyMe, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Charlie Pride, and many more! Throughout it’s 80-plus-year history, the GMA (as it is now known) has remained a cultural cornerstone for not only Greenville, but for all of North East Texas. Over the past few years, the GMA has received numerous upgrades including a new state of the art digital sound system, brand new comfortable seats, new curtains and rigging, and a restoration of many of its original art deco details that were lost over the years. In 2018, a new 501c3 Non-Profit was formed – The GMA Foundation – to raise money for continued capital improvements.
The Greenville Municipal Auditorium, affectionately known as the GMA, is a wonderfully preserved 1930s art deco performance venue in Downtown Greenville, Texas. It has been thoughtfully updated as a 1439-seat facility with wonderful acoustics for shows ranging from thrice-annual concerts of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Threadgill Concert Series, Greenville Entertainment Series and the Bob Wills National Fiddlin’ Contest as well as local performances such as dance and piano recitals. The GMA is owned and supported by the City of Greenville. The GMA Foundation was established in 2018. The GMA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation led by a volunteer Board of Directors.
